A dryer that doesn't dry properly wastes time, energy, and money. Most dryer problems are caused by a small number of components — here's what to look for.
Dryer Not Heating
The most common dryer complaint — it tumbles but produces no heat.
Most likely causes:
- Clogged lint filter or vent — restricted airflow causes overheating, which blows the thermal fuse
- Blown thermal fuse — a one-time safety device that cuts power to the heating element when the dryer overheats. Once blown, it must be replaced.
- Burned out heating element (electric) — the coil that generates heat has failed
- Weak igniter (gas) — the igniter glows but isn't hot enough to open the gas valve

Most important: If the thermal fuse is blown, always fix the underlying cause (usually a clogged vent) at the same time — otherwise the new fuse will blow again.

Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry
If your clothes need two or three cycles to dry:
- Clogged exhaust vent — the number one cause. Lint buildup in the vent hose restricts airflow dramatically. This is also a fire hazard.
- Overloaded drum — too many clothes prevent proper tumbling and airflow
- Worn felt drum seal — air bypasses the drum instead of flowing through the clothes

Clean your vent at least once a year. Disconnect the hose from the back of the dryer and check for blockages. A clogged vent is the cause of most house fires involving dryers.
Dryer Not Starting
If the dryer does nothing when you press start:
- Door switch failure — the machine thinks the door is open
- Blown thermal fuse — check this first
- Faulty start switch — the control itself has failed
- Tripped circuit breaker — electric dryers use two breakers. One may have tripped.

Dryer Making Loud Noises
- Thumping or banging — worn drum support rollers or glides
- Squealing — worn drum bearing or idler pulley
- Rattling — small items loose in the drum or blower wheel

When to Call a Professional
Clean the lint filter and vent yourself. Thermal fuse replacement, heating element replacement, gas igniter repair, and drum roller replacement require a technician.
